Do you ever wonder about the lucrative grades of your friends who study less? Have you ever thought that the top student in your class has a more powerful brain than yours? “My brain is dull; I don’t remember for a long time what I have studied”, Do these thoughts strike your mind? If yes, then, believe me, friends, you are having an illusion. In fact, the topper of your class has the same brain that all ordinary human beings have. The reason they are ahead of you in the study is because they studied smartly. I am going to share with you some of the smart techniques that, if you implement them sincerely, you will thank me for later.
- willingness to learn
There is a proverb: “If you are willing to learn, no one can stop you, but if you are not willing to learn, no one can help you.” This means the learner needs to have a deliberate urge to study; otherwise, the learning process becomes meaningless. One should remember the sacrifices made by parents for the study. How glad and proud they will be if you give them the best return on their investment through impressive results.
- Make a habit of taking notes.
This has personally helped me a lot. Make it a habit to note down the lecture of your lecturer in the classroom in a rough copy. They explain the subject matter in easier language. If you do not understand the lecture, do not hesitate to ask. When you return home, do research on the internet or read yourself to gain additional knowledge regarding the subject, then make notes in simple language, mixing all It helps you to understand and memorize the subject matter.
- Frequent revision
Unfortunately, human beings do not have divine power that enables us to store things permanently once we study. Frequent revision is indispensable to set the content for a prolonged period in our brain. Some of the techniques of revision are:
- Whatever you learned in class, you revised it when you reached home. When you read something, close your eyes and try to recall it. If you are able to recall it, then write it down on a rough copy; if not, read it again.
- After that, review the content within 24 hours. Research has shown that recalling the content within 24 hours helps our brain store information quickly.
- Whenever you have leisure time, scrutinize it frequently.
- Take breaks repeatedly.
We have a habit of sitting for long hours to study without taking breaks, especially during exam time, but believe me, it is not going to work. Taking short breaks, i.e., 15–20 minutes after studying for an hour, helps our brain retain information much better than studying tirelessly for long hours. According to neuroscientist Daniel Bor, taking breaks keeps our memory under control and makes us creative.
- study in isolation
Studying by listening to music, using social media, watching television, or eating meals are some of the habits that ruin our studies. As per the research by Stanford University, studying while distracted has a detrimental effect on student’s ability to retain information. Therefore, isolate yourself from distractions and read actively.
- Study by making mnemonics
Making mnemonics helps us memorize difficult subject matter for a longer time. For instance, ROY G.Biv is renowned for mnemonics used to remember the rainbow’s colors.
- Share what you have learned.
We are panicked about sharing what we have learned with our friends because we have the misconception that if we share, they will surpass us. Various studies have proven that sharing knowledge with others helps one understand and remember the subject matter well.
- Do not read from gadgets.
At the University of Leicester in England, a psychology lecturer discovered that when you read subject matter through gadgets like smartphones, tablets, and laptops, it would be tough to remember compared to reading from books, copies, or other paper sources. Hence, note down the notes from PDF files or other internet sources in your copy, or simply print them, which will help you remember quickly when you study.
- Evaluate yourself
It is crucial to assess how well you have understood the subject matter. The best way to evaluate ourselves is to take tests through question banks or online exams. It will help you know your strengths and weaknesses.
- Follow healthy lifestyles
There is a saying, “A healthy mind exists in a healthy body.” Therefore, to enhance your memory power, you must follow a healthy lifestyle. The healthy lifestyles that should be followed are:
- Take adequate sleep of 7-8 hours.
- Drink at least eight glasses of water a day.
- Exercise regularly
- Replace fast, processed, and junk foods with healthy, balanced foods such as seasonal fruits, nuts, green leafy vegetables, and so on.
I hope the above-mentioned techniques will help you excel in your studies. Moreover, faith, courage, and perseverance are additional key tools that help you outsmart others. If you apply the methods being determined, trust me, you will notice fruitful outcomes.
