Relation between Vaastu Saastra and Interior Design

Vastu Shastra

Vastu Shastra is a traditional architectural system that describes the principles of design, layout, measurement, and space arrangement and also includes the internal design of a certain place in a traditional way.

It has been a very important part of architectural design on the Asian continent because it illustrates that each and every aspect of this universe has a great level of energy.

And each element presented in this universe has a positive as well as a negative impact. Vastu focuses on omitting bad vibes and generating positive ones.

It is believed that if the planning of each and every interior and accessory is done according to Vaastu Shastra, then it assists in bringing peace, harmony, and prosperity to the family.

Similarly, interior design is a modern and advanced form of internal design that includes enhancing the appearance of certain places like homes, offices, hotels, apartments, etc.

Nowadays, due to modernization, the demand for interior design has increased. The influence of Western culture has a great impact on the lifestyle of Asian people as well. So, its demand has increased globally.

The connection between Vaastusaastra and interior design

Vaastusaastra and interior design are interrelated but not so interdependent. Vaastu focuses on five components of the environment. They are earth, water (icosahedron), air (octahedron), fire (tetrahedron), and space (dodecahedron). Those five elements are considered the elements of the universe. So there must not be any disorder between them; otherwise, it creates a negative imbalance around the globe. Besides, it also focuses on the east, west, north, and south directions.

Besides, the interior design focuses on pre-constructed areas. It simply means that all the structures are already prepared, and thus planning according to Vaastu may not be possible. Additionally, interior designers might already be working in the Vastu-recommended direction.

Application of Vaastu to Interior Design

The direction that the house faces affect the concept of Vaastu. A house mainly has living rooms, bedrooms, a kitchen, and a bathroom.

Living Room

In the context of the living room, the best location for it is in the northeast direction, as it creates a serene and positive atmosphere. As we know, the living room is usually the most active part of the home where there is a gathering.

  • The entrance to the living room is normally the entrance to the residence. By constructing it in the north or east, it brings health, wealth, prosperity, and fame.
  • Windows must be facing north or east. A south-west orientation is not appropriate.
  • Lighter colors should be selected for the walls since they help permeate warmth into the environment.
  • Furniture should be ideally arranged in the southern and western corners.

Bedroom

A bedroom is also the ideal place for people. This place is used for resting and storing personal things like clothes, cash, important documents, and other valuables.

According to one belief, a bedroom should be placed in the southeast, whereas the master bedroom, which is the foremost place for the head of the family, should be placed in the southwest. Light colors like rose, yellow, and green for the walls

Besides, sleeping must be done with the head facing the east direction of the bedroom. Similarly, sleeping behind windows should be avoided.

Kitchen

A kitchen is also an excellent place in a house since it contributes to the health and well-being of the family.

According to Vaastu, it is believed that the best direction for the kitchen is the southeast. The cooking stove should be placed in the southeast corner, keeping a distance from the sink. Black should not be used in the kitchen as black is a symbol of bad luck; instead, colors like rose, yellow, and orange should be given priority.

Moreover, toilets and bathrooms should not be constructed near the kitchen.

Bathroom and toilet

Bathrooms and toilets are also important places for a family. So, the wrong placement of the toilet and bathroom can create negative energy.

According to Vaastu, a bathroom should be placed in the eastern part of the house. Similarly, the mirror, windows, and ventilation should be placed in the eastern or northern part. Besides, the wash basin should be placed in the northeast, whereas the place for bathing can be faced in a western direction. For colouring, warming and soothing colours can be used.

On the other hand, different decoration items can be kept at home that bring good luck, peace, prosperity, and harmony.

Vastu decoration items include:

  1. Buddha
  2. Fish Aquariums
  3. Plants and flowers
  4. Vaastu paintings

These items not only create positive energy but also purify and beautify. So, Vastu Shastra and interior designers are interrelated.
